Designated Severe Weather Shelters

Listed below are the areas that have been identified as best suited to take refuge under severe weather, such as a tornado or high winds. Generally speaking, you should seek refuge to the lowest level of the building you can safely travel to, and toward the center of a building. Use stairwells with cinder block construction. Avoid the following spaces: areas with glass, areas beneath skylights, areas that contain caustic chemicals or contain fluids under pressure.

Review the designated shelter areas for the space you inhabit.

BERNARD BROMMEL HALL:

All stairwells, bathrooms or under the concrete ramps. Avoid open area under the center atrium.

BUILDING B:

Seek shelter in another building. If this is not possible, take refuge in the bathrooms.

BUILDING C:

Use stairwell to get to the Lower Level; if this is not possible, take refuge in center rooms near the stairwell, and stay away from offices with windows.

BUILDING D:

Use the Admissions stairwell to get to the Lower Level; if this is not possible, seek the stairwell in the E Building, near the bookstore for access to the Lower Level.

BUILDING E:

Use stairwells to get to the Lower Level.

BUILDING F:

Seek shelter in another building.

BUILDING J:

Seek shelter in another building. If this is not possible, use center corridor.

BUILDING H:

Use the tunnel system to travel to Lower Level Building E; if this is not possible, take refuge in bathrooms or interior windowless rooms.

BUILDING I:

Seek shelter in another building.

BUILDING ON BERNARD:

South corridor in the rear of the building.

CARRUTHERS CENTER FOR INNER CITY STUDIES:

Get to the Lower Level, toward the center interior of the building.

CHICAGO TEACHER'S CENTER:

On the 4th and 6th floors, take refuge in the center space, near elevator and stairs.

CHILD CARE CENTER:

Seek shelter in another building. If this is not possible, take shelter in the center corridor, stay away from exterior doors.

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT:

All bathrooms of the main corridors. Avoid the center lounge.

EL CENTRO:

Pending.

FINE ARTS BUILDING:

All bathrooms and corridors without overhead skylights. Avoid areas under any skylights.

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE:

Seek shelter in another building, if this is not possible use the locker room or adjacent bathroom and stay away from windows.

LECH WALESA HALL:

Use stairwell to access tunnels, then travel to Lower Level Building E or D; if this is not possible, take refuge in Lecture Halls 1001 or 1002, or any bathrooms. Avoid center atrium.

LIBRARY:

Get to Lower Level if it is still safe to use stairs; if this is not possible, seek refuge toward the center interior of your floor. Avoid taking refuge in these stairwells.

THE NEST:

Take refuge in stairwell. Avoid rooms with windows.

PARKING FACILITY:

Pending.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION COMPLEX:

Locker rooms, handball courts corridor, or office space corridors. Avoid areas under skylights.

STUDENT UNION:

Use tunnel to travel to Lower Level Building E or D; if this is not possible, take refuge in any confined stairwell or bathrooms. If you cannot get out of the 2nd floor, take refuge in the north corridor. Avoid areas under skylights

TESTING CENTER:
