I am interested in neuronal cell death caused by oxidative stress in hyperglycemic conditions, such as in diabetes, and in the agents that could prevent it. The other area of my research involves immune protection provided to an infant by mother's milk, specifically secretory IgA (sIgA). My lab is interested in determining the content of sIgA in milk supplied by milk banks to infants in need of breastmilk.

Research Interests
Environmental Chemistry & Surface Analytical Chemistry; My research interests lie in using scanning probe microscopy to investigate the environmental response characteristics of a class of red-light photoreceptors, specifically bacteriophytochromes. The SPM will be used to determine if there is a connection between the molecular structure of the photoreceptor and the magnitude of its fluorescence emission quantum yield. Both wild-type and engineered fluorescent mutants will be examined. I am also interested in identifying and quantifying petroleum based pollutants and additives in natural water systems, the transport of these pollutants from their source(s), and potential methods of remediation. This project involves field work, on-site analysis, and laboratory experiments, particularly chromatography.

Background

Olubunmi Basirat Oyewuwo, PhD, LMSW is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Northeastern Illinois University. Her research agenda focuses on improving the health and well-being outcomes of women, as well as Black, Muslim, and immigrant communities. She has led projects examining the intimate partner violence (IPV) experiences of American Muslims, including a qualitative study examining how the intersectionality of race, gender, and religion shape Black Muslim women’s IPV coping processes using an ethnically diverse sample. She is currently the PI of a national survey that examines American Muslims’ experiences and perceptions of IPV. This research is being conducted in collaboration with Peaceful Families Project (PFP), a national organization that provides education and training on domestic violence to the American Muslim community.

Prior to pursuing her PhD, her practice experience included working in a domestic violence shelter as a legal advocate and in a battering intervention and prevention program as a group facilitator. Dr. Oyewuwo has taught across social work programs, curriculum areas, and modalities. She currently serves as the curriculum specialist for the NEIU BSW research sequence.
