Sigma Delta Pi is the National Honor Society in Spanish. Established on Nov. 14, 1919, its key is a miniature representation of the coat of arms of Castile, its colors are red and gold, and its flower is the red carnation. The purposes of the Society are to honor those who seek and attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language, literature and culture; to honor those who strive to make the Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known to non-Spanish speaking people; to encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture; and to foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of other languages.
