Tutoring

LSC/CAW provides free, peer-led learning support for all NEIU students.

LSC/CAW tutors are undergraduate and graduate NEIU students trained to support student learning in the following areas:

LSC/CAW tutors and staff work to promote active learning strategies, encourage student engagement, and provide content and skill support. Academic support is provided to students who are seeking assistance with understanding course concepts and preparing assignments, along with developing an improved learning system for college which includes motivation, academic engagement, brain-based habits for college learning, and learning strategies for note taking, textbook reading, and test taking.

Tutoring sessions are predominantly one-on-one and involve the tutor and the student having a conversation about what the student is working on and what they feel they need help with. Small group sessions, group review sessions, workshops, and course-specific drop-in hours are often scheduled throughout the semester.

Walk-in sessions are possible, but appointments are strongly encouraged in order to secure one-on-one time with a tutor. Most tutoring sessions are approximately 50-minutes long.

Why Work with a Tutor?

Everyone benefits from working with a tutor! LSC/CAW tutors are trained to support student learning. They help all students work through issues and questions related to course material, assignments, and assessments. Some things to know about tutoring:

  • It is free to NEIU students
  • All appointment times are available for in-person or online sessions, and writing and math appointments are offered seven days a week during Fall and Spring
  • Seeing a tutor on a regular basis helps you develop good study and writing habits
  • Tutors are NEIU students -- so they are familiar with NEIU and many of the classes they help students with
  • Working with a tutor is a way to check your understanding of material and to practice and improve math and writing skills

Who Are the Tutors?

All LSC/CAW tutors are NEIU undergraduate and graduate students who are recommended by faculty in their major departments. Tutors are hired through a rigorous application and interview process. All tutors participate in mandatory synchronous and asynchronous training activities in order to learn about the theory and practice of learning support and other information helpful to supporting NEIU students.
