The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) demonstrates Northeastern Illinois University’s urban tradition of education, research and service. The Carruthers Center offers an undergraduate and graduate degree in Urban Community Studies to prepare students act upon the expressed interests of the residents of Chicago and to participate fully in the richness of the African and African-American cultures. Our curriculum re-examines every research issue, assumption and question from an African-centered perspective. CCICS aims to build research methodologies among its students to advance their career paths.

CCICS Freshman Cohort
The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) Freshman Cohort Program is a beneficial way for students to learn in a tight-knit classroom setting. In addition to the small environment, the Cohort Program will prepare students with training that will assist them in being more effective in their communities, families and workplaces.

The Jacob H. Carruthers Center, located on the South Side in Chicago's historic Bronzeville neighborhood, takes pride in being an African-centered institution that provides educational opportunities within a culturally comfortable and easily accessible setting. CCICS student resources include two computer labs, an extensive resource center on African-American issues, and Student Disability Services support. Northeastern students enjoy cultural events, career-oriented clubs, national conferences and celebrity guest speakers.
CCICS Pearson Testing Center
The Jacob H. Carruthers Center offers fully accredited exams through Pearson Vue. We offer high-stakes exams empowering professions to certify and license individuals who safeguard and advance their communities across the globe. We help prepare testing candidates with courseware, scenario-based labs, practice tests and more. The CCICS Testing Center is available to all Illinois residents eligible to take State Board Exams.
