Northeastern will officially celebrate the arrival of its seventh president, Gloria J. Gibson, next week with a full slate of activities that range from academic to ceremonial to downright delicious. - Northeastern will host a Graduate Open House on Oct. 3.
- Mathematics Professor and Department Chair Lidia Filus presented two articles that she co-authored, “Enforced Regression Paradigm” and “Two Universal Representation of Bivariate Survival Functions,” during the Statistical and Stochastic Modelling Session of the ICNPAA World Congress 2018: Mathematical Problems in Engineering, Aerospace and Sciences. The Conference took place at American University of Armenia in July.

President Gloria J. Gibson has appeared in several news outlets in recent days. The Chicago Tribune chose to focus on her status as the first African-American woman to be president at Northeastern. “I’m very proud to serve as a role model for women, women of color and my student body,” Gibson told the Chicago Tribune. “I’m very proud that I have reached a level in the academy where I can make a greater impact.” Gibson also appeared in The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education.

Goodwin Lecture
Three-time Olympic gold medal track and field athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee will participate in a talk titled “An Evening With Jackie Joyner-Kersee” as Northeastern presents the fourth installment of the Daniel L. Goodwin Distinguished Lecture Series on Sept. 11. Dubbed “The Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century” by Sports Illustrated, Joyner-Kersee is second to none. She won six Olympic medals (three gold, one silver, two bronze) and four World Champion titles over four consecutive Olympic Games. Both President Gloria J. Gibson and Joyner-Kersee were born in East St. Louis, Ill. In 1988, Joyner-Kersee established the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, which provides youth, adults and families with the resources to improve their quality of life with special attention directed to East St. Louis.
