Ensemble Español will host “Flamenco Passion: A Tribute to Dame Libby Komaiko” featuring their popular live dance and music performances as part of the company’s 43rd American Spanish Dance & Music Festival from June 14-16. The performances are in honor of founder Dame Libby Komaiko, who passed away earlier this year.
The “Flamenco Passion” performances will feature more than 40 dancers and musicians, including guest artists in a fusion of classical, folkloric, traditional, contemporary and flamenco styles. Joining this year’s roster of artists: choreographer/dancers Carmela Greco, daughter of the legendary José Greco; Carlos Rodriguez, José Barrios; and musicians Paco Fonta (flamenco singer and guitarist), Antonio Gabarri Jimenez and David Chiriboga (flamenco guitarists), Javier Saume Mazzei (percussionist), Jane Kenas Heller (pianist) and Brian Torosian (classical guitarist).
As part of the festival, the Ensemble will also host a series of Spanish and flamenco dance classes June 7-12 at the company’s dance studios on Northeastern’s Main Campus. Classes range from beginner to professional level. Instructors include guest artists Carmela Greco, Carlos Rodriquez and José Barrios and Ensemble Español Artistic Director Irma Suarez Ruiz.
“Flamenco Passion: A Tribute to Dame Libby Komaiko” will take place at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. Performances are Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 16, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20-$50 and are on sale now.
