Northeastern offers "conditional admission" to those international applicants who meet all admission criteria other than English language proficiency.* Conditional admission is contingent on students being enrolled in Northeastern's intensive English program: SAELL.
*NOTE: Students applying for MA/MS programs must still be approved by the individual department for conditional admission and may have to meet additional requirements imposed by the department. Additionally, there is an expectation that applicants for a master's degree do not possess below an IELTS composite score of 5.5 or the equivalent and will not take more than a year to meet the English language requirement for admission.
How to Apply
Students will need to complete the appropriate application for their respective level (undergraduate or graduate) and submit all required documents in order for their application to be considered (See "Come to Northeastern" to find the steps and checklist of required documents). Normal international student application deadlines apply to applicants for conditional admission. If the student is granted conditional admission status, an I-20 will be issued covering the length of study for the degree program plus one additional year (the year before the start of the degree) to cover the term of language study.
Alternatively, students who know they do not meet the English language proficiency requirement and/or who miss a deadline for submitting an application may apply for a "SAELL only" admission and use the time in the United States to prepare for and complete a full application. Note, however, that SAELL only students will only be issued a "Language Training" I-20 for one (1) year until they have completed the full application process and been accepted for conditional or full admission by the university; once that happens, the I-20 will be amended.
