ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants to the Graduate Programs in Literacy Education program must meet the admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies and Research. For admission to the Graduate Programs in Literacy Education, candidates must provide evidence of:

  • A current Illinois professional educator license endorsed for teaching
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.75 in undergraduate work with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the education major coursework
  • Submission of a 500-word written essay focused on professional experiences and goals
  • Two letters of recommendation

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Candidates begin with LTCY 501 and LTCY 504, followed by LTCY 502 and LTCY 507. Candidates then take the clinical practicum courses. To qualify for clinical practicum, students must:

  • have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • submit at least one Self-Evaluation of Professional Dispositions

Each student takes two clinical courses: LTCY 508, Clinical Practicum, Literacy Assessment and Intervention at the Elementary Level, and LTCY 510, Clinical Practicum, Literacy Assessment and Intervention at the Secondary Level.

EXIT REQUIREMENTS

In the semester before they plan to complete their program, candidates must:

  • notify Program Coordinator of their intent to complete the endorsement
  • have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0

Please note: To be entitled by the state to be a Reading Teacher, candidates must pass the Illinois Reading Teacher Test and submit scores to the Literacy Education Program.
