4-day Lifeguard Certification Course

Dates: August 24 - 27, 2017
Days and Times: Thursday and Friday 5 pm-9 pm, Saturday and Sunday 9 am-5 pm
To earn certification you must attend all hours of the course and pass a written test as well as a skills test.
Cost: NEIU Students $150; all others $300

1) Must be 15 years old by the last date of the course
2) Pass the following swim test:

Swim 300 yards front crawl or breast stroke without stopping
Tread water with legs only for 2 minutes 
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Employment at Campus Recreation is possible with Lifeguard certification.

Northeastern Illinois University's Campus Recreation department offers recreational activities & swim lessons for the whole family! Our pool has an 8 lane 25 yard lap area and a 14 foot diving well with 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards.  Programming includes open swim, adult and children learn-to-swim lessons, water polo club, underwater hockey, Women's Only Hour, and much more.
