Northeastern Illinois University Ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s "Best Colleges"
Northeastern tops the list of universities for graduates with least amount of debt and ranks high for most ethnically diverse university.
CHICAGO - Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) in Chicago has been ranked in two categories in U.S. News & World Report’s
2013 edition of "Best Colleges." NEIU remains the leader among all universities in the nation for having the lowest percentage of students who graduate with student loan debt. Also, Northeastern has been listed as one of the most ethnically diverse universities in the nation.
Least Debt
The data for the debt rankings were drawn from each institution’s 2011 graduating class. According to U.S. News & World Report
, the data includes loans taken out by students from the colleges themselves, from private financial institutions, and from federal, state and local governments. Parents’ loans are not included. Only 14 percent of Northeastern’s 2011 graduating class incurred debt, and those students borrowed an average of $12,100. The University’s percentage of students incurring debt is the lowest among all universities in the country, and the amount of debt they incurred is the lowest in the Midwest.
Most Diverse
The data for the diversity rankings were drawn from each institution’s 2011-2012 enrollment numbers. According to
U.S. News & World Report
, the groups forming the basis for the diversity ranking calculations were African-American (non-Hispanic), Hispanic, American Indian, Asian-American, Pacific Islander, White (non-Hispanic), and multiracial.
Northeastern Illinois University is the only four-year, public university federally designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution.
