Dean Murrell J. Higgins Duster
Murrell J. Higgins Duster served in several key faculty, administrative, and leadership roles in her more than 35 years at Northeastern Illinois University. She was the founding Associate Vice President for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs for the Angelina Pedroso Center. Upon her retirement in 2012, Dean Duster continued her legacy at NEIU by endowing a scholarship fund to assist students with costs associated with attending Northeastern Illinois University.
- All applicants must be currently enrolled Northeastern Illinois University students.
- Scholarships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Students currently enrolled in their last semester cannot apply.
How to Apply:
Applications are now being accepted for the Murrell J. Higgins Duster Scholarship. There will be four $400 scholarships awarded to students enrolled for the Fall 2017 semester. Application materials can be found here. NOTE: The application form is fillable, so please download the form to your desktop to complete.
A complete application packet includes the application form providing all information requested and a 500 word essay on how your involvement with the Pedroso Center has enhanced your understanding of diversity, social justice and/or intersectionality and what these concepts mean to you with regard to your identity.
Please consider utilizing campus resources such as the Learning Support Center to review your essay before you submit your application.
The deadline to submit a completed application form along with an essay is 4:30 p.m. on March 24, 2017.

Recipients will be selected and notified by April 10th. Recognition of recipients will take place on April 19th. Scholarships will be applied to recipients’ tuition accounts after September 1st. Each recipient is required to submit a donor Thank You letter upon notification of the scholarship award.
