Become a lifeguard at Campus Rec! The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

NEIU Campus Recreation pool

Friday, May 12, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. 
Saturday, May 13, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Sunday, May 14, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (20 hours total)

Please note: There will be no breaks. Students will not be able to leave the building for meals. Please bring lunch/food or be prepared to order with the group. Students must be present for all class times listed. 

Cost to NEIU students: $150
All others: $300

*Once the pre-test is passed patricipants will be charged the additional $115 for NEIU students, or $265 for others.

Must be at least 15 years old and be a proficient swimmer (parental permission and proof of age required first day of class) able to complete a 300 yard continuous swim using front crawl and breaststroke. Participants must be able to tread water for 2 minutes legs only and complete the following timed event: Swim a distance of 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object at a depth of 7 to 10 feet and swim back to the wall in 1 minute 40 seconds (no goggles).

General Information:
This course is both in the pool and the classroom. Be prepared to be on the pool deck for several hours--bring a towel and clothing to remain warm while on deck or in the classroom. This class includes both physical and written tests to earn certification. Students will be able to download a free text from the internet.

Certification is valid for two years as an ARC Lifeguard, includes first aid, professional rescuer CPR/AED.

Northeastern Illinois University's Campus Recreation department offers recreational activities & swim lessons for the whole family! Our pool has an 8 lane 25 yard lap area and a 14 foot diving well with 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards.  Programming includes open swim, adult and children learn-to-swim lessons, water polo club, underwater hockey, Women's Only Hour, and much more.
