How do I know if I am graduating? The Student Union, Event and Conference Services does not decide who graduates. All petitions for graduation are handled by Enrollment Services for undergraduate students, and the Graduate College for graduate students. If you are not sure if you're graduating, call Enrollment Services at (773) 442-4000.
What time do I have to be at Commencement? Graduates should plan to be at Commencement one hour before the ceremony starts. Graduates will be directed to the sign-in area. Guests should also plan to arrive at Commencement by 3 p.m.
Where do I get my cap and gown? Caps and gowns are available for sale at Beck's Book Store. The undergraduate package includes the cap, gown, and tassel. The graduate package includes the cap, gown, tassel and hood. Call Becks Book Store at (773) 442-4990.

What should I wear under my cap and gown? For Commencement ceremonies, women often wear dresses, suits, skirts or pants with blouses. Men often wear suits or dress slacks and shirts with ties.
How many guests can I bring to Commencement? Each graduate will be given six tickets to Commencement. Graduates may also place their names on a waiting list for two additional tickets.
Where do I get tickets for Commencement? Commencement tickets may be picked up at the University Information Center starting Thursday, April 11 until Friday, May 10, 2013.
Students must show a photo I.D. to collect tickets (NEIU I.D., State I.D./Driver's License, Passport, etc.).
How much do Commencement tickets cost? Commencement tickets are free.
Can you mail my Commencement tickets to me? The Office of Student Union, Event and Conference Services is not responsible for lost or stolen tickets, and does not recommend mailing tickets, as we will be unable to replace them if they are lost in the mail. However, if you have special circumstances, please call (773) 442-4630.
I need more tickets, what can I do? If additional tickets are needed, the graduate can place their name on a waiting list for two additional tickets. Extra tickets will be distributed in the order in which requests were made.
What if I don't want to walk in the Commencement ceremony? You are not required to walk in the Commencement Ceremony, and you may still graduate and receive your diploma if you decide not to participate in Commencement. Since the Commencement Ceremony is held before the end of the semester, diplomas are not awarded on Commencement day. Once the semester is complete and final grades are calculated, those who have earned their diplomas will be notified by mail as to how they can pick up or have their diplomas sent to them.
I want to walk in the Commencement ceremony, but I'm not sure if I'll be there or not. What should I do? If you want to participate in Commencement, but are not sure if you will be able to, the Office of Student Union, Event and Conference Services recommends that you collect your tickets and plan to attend. On the day of Commencement, graduates will be given name cards that will indicate who is present that day. So if you plan to attend Commencement, but then are unable to, you will not create any disruptions on Commencement Day.
Where do I and my guests park on Commencement day? Graduates and guests will be directed to the proper parking lots once they arrive to the UIC Pavilion.
How do I arrange special seating or special parking for myself or my guests? Guests who require special seating will be greeted in the main lobby by UIC Pavilion staff. Ushers will assist guests with seating.
How do I arrange for interpreter services for deaf and hard of hearing graduates or guests? An interpreter will be on site and special seating close to the interpreter is available. Please call (773) 442-4630 for more information and to make arrangements.
Who attends the Salute to Graduates and the Academic Honors Reception?
All graduates are encouraged to attend the Salute to Graduates.
The Academic Honors Reception is a special ceremony for students who are graduating with honors based on their GPA. At that ceremony, graduates will be given medals to wear at Commencement that indicate that they are graduating with either Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Summa Cum Laude honors. Students participating in the University Honors Program are also honored and receive medals at the Academic Honors Reception.
