Frequently Asked Questions
Are NEIU Officers REALLY Police Officers? Yes. Police Officers of the NEIU Police Dept. are academy trained and certified in the same manner as all other public Law Enforcement Officers in the State of Illinois. The NEIU Police Dept. Offers 24-hour patrol services to the campus and the surrounding neighborhood year round. The NEIU Police Dept. is governed by a State Statute that gives our Officers the same authority as Municipal Police Officers.
I locked my keys in my office – what do I do? Call extension 4100 to request your office to be unlocked, a police officer will be sent to your location shortly after. Please wait at the location until an officer arrives. Be prepared to show identification.
I locked my keys in my vehicle – what do I do? Please stop into the NEIU Police Dept. You will be asked to fill out a Lockout Waiver form, a Police Officer will then attempt to unlock your vehicle using a device called a “Slim Jim.”
Where can I park? For Parking Information please contact the Parking Dept. located on the northeast end of the parking garage.
If I am involved in or witness an incident on campus what should I do? Please call x5511 or come into the NEIU Police Dept. immediately, all incidents should be reported in a timely fashion with the NEIU Police Dept.
I had an accident on campus - where should I file a report? All accidents that occur on NEIU property should be reported the NEIU Police Dept. Please call NEIU Police Dept. immediately if medical attention is needed. You will be given further instructions upon call.
The Heat/Air does not work in my classroom – what should I do? Please contact Facilities Maintenance Service request hotline at extension x5240 for all your facilities needs.
How do I get a copy of a police report? In the case of automobile accidents, please be advised that only your insurance company may request a copy of the police report. In other incidents you may request a summary of any police report by completing a Freedom of Information Act Request Form. These forms are available in the University Relations Office. It may take 7 to 10 business days to process your request. Ordinarily, we do not make reports available to anyone outside the criminal justice system – you will be provided with a summary of the report. Can I make a police report over the phone? No. Depending on the situation we will either have a Police Officer come meet you at your location or you will be asked to come into the NEIU Police Dept. to speak with a Police Officer.
How do I request a presentation by a Police Officer? You can request that a Police Officer give a presentation to your group by e-mailing the Crime Prevention Coordinator Lieutenant Paul Kruszynski at P-Kruszynski@Neiu.edu. If you have any further questions please call us directly at (773)442-4100.
Is it safe to walk on campus at night? Yes, provided that you take some simple steps to enhance your safety. First, Travel in well-lit well traveled areas and try not to walk alone. Always be alert to suspicious people or circumstances. If something or someone does not seem right to you, go to a well-lit populated area and notify the police. Familiarize yourself with the locations of Emergency phones around campus – if you ever have a problem these are a direct line to the NEIU Police.
I know the campus is safe but I do not feel safe walking to my vehicle at night - what do I do? The NEIU Police Dept. offers a Safety Escort service. Please call the NEIU Police Dept. and give your current location on campus and your vehicle’s location. An NEIU Police officer will meet you at your location and Escort you to your vehicle.
When can I be fingerprinted? The NEIU Police Dept. provides fingerprinting services to University affiliates (students, faculty, and staff) when there is a Police Officer available. Be sure to bring a government issued photo ID with you, as well as any fingerprint cards or special instructions for the officer. There is a fee of $10 a card is required for any non-University related purposes. We ask that you call (773)442-4100 to verify that there is an officer available prior to traveling to the NEIU Police Dept.
