Northeastern El Centro Campus Forges Partnership with Cambodian Association of Illinois
CHICAGO — Today Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) and the Cambodian Association of Illinois (CAI) held a ceremony to mark the beginning of a new partnership between the two institutions. Sharon Hahs, president of Northeastern Illinois University; Dary Mien, executive director of the Cambodian Association of Illinois; and Sochetra Chhuon, chairman of the board of directors of the Cambodian Association of Illinois, ceremoniously signed a partnership agreement at the event held this morning at the CAI offices on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
In addition to witnessing a ceremonial signing of a partnership agreement, attendees participated in a brief memorial service in remembrance of the 4.3 million Cambodians who lost their lives in the Cambodian genocide between 1975 and 1979.
This partnership is especially important for Northeastern as it prepares for a fall 2014 opening of its new El Centro Campus. The new NEIU El Centro Campus currently is under construction in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood at 3390 N. Avondale Ave. In addition to serving Northeastern students, the NEIU El Centro Campus is dedicated to providing resources to its surrounding community. The Cambodian Association of Illinois is the first community organization to formally enter into a partnership agreement with the NEIU El Centro Campus.
Hahs, said, “The signing of this agreement is a symbol of our commitment to welcoming the members of the Cambodian community to the El Centro Campus and to the University. It is my hope that this partnership, founded upon a mutual belief in the power of education to transform individuals and the world, will do much to ensure that generations to come learn from the past as they create a new future.”
Mein added, “The Cambodian Association of Illinois and its Heritage Museum and Memorial is thrilled to formally partner with Northeastern Illinois University on giving more to the community. We are excited that this partnership will impact the Cambodian American community, the students of NEIU and the community.”
