NEIU Named Lead Institution in Civic Engagement by National Association
Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is taking its place as a leading institution in a national initiative on civic learning and democratic engagement. Northeastern Illinois University has been named one of only 50 institutions in the nation as a Civic Learning Leadership Institution by NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the leading voice for the student affairs profession.
As a participating institution in NASPA’s initiative, NEIU will continue to develop partnerships to increase each student’s commitment to being engaged and active citizens, serving their communities and undertaking leadership roles both on and off campus.
“Northeastern Illinois University is pleased to be selected to participate in a network of institutions dedicated to developing students’ sense of civic purpose. Student engagement in and with the community is an important component of the student experience at an urban university such as ours,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Frank E. Ross. “Our goal is to develop involved, civically active citizens at NEIU. Civic engagement activities provide a way to do that. We are helping students develop critical thinking and leadership skills that are helpful now and beyond graduation.”
Northeastern Illinois University is currently building and supporting more civic engagement through strengthening relationships with organizations near each NEIU campus, evaluating the University’s civic health through data collection and research and creating more intentional opportunities for civic engagement by partnering with faculty, student affairs professionals, students and community members.
Community Engagement activities are happening on all of the NEIU’s campuses, including faculty mini-grants for service learning projects, political engagement through the Office of Student Leadership Development and student community service projects.
