School for the Advancement of English Language and Learning (SAELL)
The School for the Advancement of English Language and Learning (SAELL) was established in 2013. Its mission is to holistically develop English proficiency for students’ academic, professional and communicative needs. SAELL’s curriculum follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, while also integrating experiences of real-life language use in Chicago.
Today, we offer two programs:
- SAELL Intensive English Program (IEP) at our Main Campus in Chicago is an in-person program with full-time and part-time options
- SAELL Anywhere is a part-time, online program for students anywhere in the world
Common European Framework Reference-CEFR Standards
SAELL at Northeastern uses the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR) to measure English language proficiency. Because our levels were founded upon the CEFR bands and standards, our students can expect that their English language study with SAELL will be internationally recognized according to CEFR standards.
In each SAELL course, teachers prepare students for undergraduate and graduate study at Northeastern Illinois University or other higher education institutions. Students complete tasks relating to their future academic study. All courses focus on improving students’ reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary skills in an integrated manner.
