The Self Study Report

Title Sheet

  • Program Name:
  • Program Coordinator:
  • Date of Report:
  1. Introduction

    • Program rationale :
    • The program’s mission:
    • Distinguishing features of the curricular and/or co-curricular offerings:
    • Enrollment figures or number of participants in the program for each year over the last 5 years:
    • Program completers for each year over the last 5 years:
    • Number of faculty/staff currently in the program:
  2. Program goals and intended student learning outcomes

    • Program Goals
(student learning and operational). For each student learning goal, relate at least two student learning outcomes
    • Graphic showing relationships between student learning outcomes and the specific courses and/or activities where these will be achieved
  3. DIRECT EVIDENCE of how well the program goals are achieved. Included here would be data analyses and discussion of results from the use of

    • Tests, rubrics used to assess student learning (student projects or performance, student portfolios, etc.), observational checklists, scores from standardized tests, reviews of student research, honors theses, reports from supervisors at field sites who directly observed the student performing related learning tasks, etc.
    • Direct evidence includes course, activity and end-of-program assessments; assessments of co-curricular experiences; and assessments of other activities designed to help students achieve intended program goals and learning outcomes.
  4. INDIRECT EVIDENCE and other measures that show program quality and the uniqueness of the program. Included here, for example, would be data analyses and discussion of results from the use of

    • Student satisfaction surveys or focus groups or interviews (put actual instrument in the appendices)
    • Alumni surveys
    • Student reflective essays on their learning in the program
    • SALG (student assessment of learning gains)
    • Feedback received from other departments regarding level of preparation and success of students who participated in this program.
  5. The assessment plan (for the next 3-5 years should be included in the appendices)

  6. External Scanning

Compare NEIU’s program with programs of a similar type at our peer institutions (national and state peer groups). Examine and summarize what is found about:

    • Goals, intended outcomes, curricular and co-curricular components
    • Program Offerings—what services and learning activities do they provide? How are these delivered? Who is the intended audience? What are their results?
    • Number of program participants
    • Organizational structure and support: What are the staffing arrangements? Where does the program fit into the organizational structure of the university? What is the level of funding for the program and/or its special initiatives? (Level of institutional support, federal, state, and grant funding)
    • Actual Outcomes

    Identify changes in:

    • Disciplinary or Programmatic Trends (what changes have been experienced nationally or regionally by programs of this type?)
    • Student demand, demographics, level of preparation, career goals, etc. (how have these changed over time)
    • National/state trends that impact or may impact the program (trends in higher education, federal and state legislation, funding of students’ education, jobs outlook, etc.)
    • Economic and budgetary considerations

Discuss how the program has responded to these changes or will respond to these changes.

  7. Program Delivery

Given the program’s goals, does the program have sufficient resources to implement its program?

    • People
    • Space
    • Time
    • Funding support—internal, external
  8. Summary

Summarize the major points of analyses and discussion of the preceding sections. Discuss the implications and the actions taken to date as a result of the findings.

  9. Recommendations

Based on the findings, make recommendations for improvements in the curriculum, co-curriculum, assessment practices, and/or instructional practices, organizational structures, enrollments, program completions, and resources needed to support those improvements.

Include a tentative plan to achieve those improvements over the next five years.
