NEIU Hits the Airwaves

Northeastern Illinois University has recently entered a second partnership with Chicago Public Media, the parent company of Chicago Public Radio 91.5FM and Vocalo 89.5FM. This new partnership brings the voices and stories of NEIU faculty, staff and students to the airwaves of Vocalo.

Chicago Public Media selected NEIU to participate in a pilot project aimed to bring public radio to the Millennial generation. The NEIU public relations office is closely working with the hosts/producers of Vocalo's morning show, the Morning Amp, to generate content of interest to young adults of ethnically diverse backgrounds in Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

Through the show, NEIU faculty and staff are able to relate their expertise to various topics of general interest. Those who already have participated in the program have joined Molly and Brian, hosts of the Morning AMp, in their studio on Navy Pier for these 20-minute segments.

Edward Stuart, professor, economics and international/intercultural studies, has been on the show twice--once to talk about taxes and another time to talk about the lagging economy. Barbara Cosentino, assistant director, career services, was featured on a show and provided tips for job seekers. And Lisa Hollis-Sawyer, associate professor, psychology, and coordinator, gerontology program, discussed cultural and social attitudes toward aging. The Morning AMp also has featured a pre-produced radio piece about flash mobs, which was created by Janet Bar, Angelica Echon, Carrie Robertson, and Patryk Szwanhowski -students of Edie Rubinowitz, assistant professor, communication, media and theatre.
This partnership with Vocalo is the second for NEIU with Chicago Public Media. The initial partnership, called Chicago Amplified, is with Chicago Public Radio and includes an audio archive of presentations that have taken place at NEIU. To explore the archive, visit
