The Northeastern Illinois University Foundation’s annual Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event raised $35,600 for student scholarships this year, the second-best fundraising result in the 42 years of the tournament.

The Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event is held annually in memory of former athletic director and golf coach Charles “Chuck” Kane. Chuck Kane scholarships have supported more than 125 students, a group known as The Second 9, since 1973.

“The mission of this event is to support our students with scholarships and to honor the memory of a consummate professor,” said Melba Rodriguez, executive director of the Foundation and the University’s vice president for Institutional Advancement. “It is one of the most symbolic efforts of the Foundation and we are grateful to everyone who joins us in our efforts.”

The tournament, held Aug. 18 at Traditions at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling, drew a number of notable alumni among the 134 golfers, including NBA referee Danny Crawford and former MLB pitcher Alan Hargesheimer. (Check out pictures of the event.)

The evening dinner program featured three prominent alumni speakers:

  • Brian James (M.A. ’92 Administration and Supervision - General Administration), Northwestern University men’s assistant basketball coach and NBA assistant coach for 14 years
  • Victoria Otto (B.A. ’97 Physical Education), physical and health education teacher, girls track and field assistant coach at Highland Park High School, and winner of the 2012 Midwest Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year and 2011 Illinois Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year awards
  • Robert Stassen (B.A. ’09 Physical Education K-12), total wellness department chair and soccer coach at Saint Ignatius College Prep, and 2014 Illinois Private/Parochial Girls State Coach of the Year.
