"I am passionate about our university, and I am deeply committed to assuring that our students are well-prepared for leadership and service in our global society."
Sharon Hahs, Ph.D., has served as President of Northeastern Illinois University since 2007. Dr. Hahs is deeply committed to ensuring that students are well-prepared for leadership and service in a global society. Northeastern is a fully accredited public university serving more than 10,000 full and part-time undergraduate and graduate students at five locations in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is a dynamic university with remarkable diversity; excellent faculty; high quality academic programs; and a proven track record of career preparation.
Dr. Hahs is passionate about Northeastern. She led an extensive strategic planning initiative that resulted in new degree programs and professional accreditations, and improved graduation rates, graduating the highest number of students in Northeastern’s history.
As president, Dr. Hahs is a leader of positive change. She has established the Enrollment Planning Council, University Planning and Budget Council, Development Council, University Advisory Council, Great Service Matters Program, Presidential Fellows Program, Ombuds Program, and the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs.
During her tenure, Northeastern Illinois University has dedicated four buildings and six centers. In November of 2012, Dr. Hahs and the University broke ground for a new El Centro location, a focal point for the Latino community, in the Chicago Avondale neighborhood, allowing NEIU to expand academic and community programming. The El Centro building opened in the fall of 2014. Dr. Hahs also announced a master plan of six facilities projects, “Decade of Dreams,” including mixed-use developments of retail and student housing, a new education building and more.
During her presidency, the University has enjoyed national recognition. Most recently, Newsweek magazine named Northeastern Illinois University the sixth best investment among all universities in the nation and number one in Illinois. Harvard, Princeton, MIT and Stanford join NEIU in the top 10.
Prior to being appointed as President in 2007, Dr. Hahs served as Provost and Vice Chancellor, 2000-2006, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, 1995-2000, at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
